book-revueA Long Island Bookstore

As you know, we love when readers contribute reviews of their favorite bookstores and the farther from LA they are, the better we like them.  Supportive and enthusiastic reader Meagan Cea lives in Huntington, New York and is a sophomore at Queens College in Flushing.  We’re very grateful to her for the following review.  The rest of this post is hers.

In this economy everyone is trying to pinch pennies. A surprising
and wonderful side effect is that, in the effort to save money, more
and more people are choosing books over movies and video games. But for
those with a real habit, reading isn’t necessarily cheaper at 15, 20,
sometimes 30 dollars a pop. That is, if you haven’t discovered a way to
feed your addiction.

Whenever people think of New York, they think of New York City,
Manhattan. It’s only natural. Yet in doing so they forget about another
wonderful little island: Long Island. If by chance you do remember Long
Island and find yourself out in Suffolk County, you just may stumble
upon Huntington Village. Huntington Village, also known as downtown
Huntington, is THE hot spot for any kind of entertainment you’re looking

the best thing in town is of course, the bookstore. Read the rest of this entry »

The National Endowment for the Arts Says We’re Reading More

Everyone’s seen this story: for the first time in  twenty-five years, the decline in reading in America appears to have been reversed.  According to the NEA’s statistics, reading is on the rise.  (If, by some crazy chance, you haven’t heard about this yet, you can read the NY Times’ coverage of it here.)  Since many people have spent a lot of time lately moaning about how our national computer addiction is going to destroy reading as we know it, this news comes as a welcome surprise to those of us who love books.

In a recent Wall Street Journal piece, novelist Ann Patchett (Bel Canto) discusses the new statistics at great length and makes a plea for us all to continue the trend by reading, encouraging others to read, and by support ing our local libraries.  Patchett says she wasn’t surprised to hear that people are reading more: after all, this younger generation has grown up on Harry Potter and, as she puts it,  ”They came of age attending midnight release parties at their local bookstores and then faking mysterious illnesses the next day for the absolute necessity of staying in bed to read. ” Read the rest of this entry »

A quick note about this week’s New York Times Style Magazine

I love me my Sunday New York Times.   Takes me almost a full week to read it, but I do enjoy it.  This week the special Style Magazine profiled Michael Bruno who’s the guy who . . . you know.  Michael Bruno.  Okay, I hadn’t heard of him before this, either, but apparently he founded something called 1stdibs.com which gives anyone with a computer access to antique and vintage wares of all sorts from dealers all over the world and which, when I checked it out just now, sent me into a mildly pornographic daydream involving nine thousand dollar chandeliers for our diningroom.

Anyway, among a list of a few of his favorite things, Bruno mentioned his favorite Miami bookstore, Books and Books.  Click here to read what he said in the New York Times and to see the photo of the store which made my mouth drool.   And if you live in Miami or plan to visit sometime soon, visit the store and write us a longer review of it.
