Frances McClellan is an old friend of mine. We used to see each every week when she lived in Los Angeles. A few years ago she abandoned us and moved to Northern California, something about getting married and her husband living there, details. She recently went on a few trips with said ‘friend robber,’ visited some bookstores (showing she’s a woman of good taste) and sent us a few reviews, here’s the first:
The Twig Book Shop, an old favorite of mine in San Antonio, Texas has found a new home within the just repurposed Pearl Brewery. The Pearl as it is called, has become a bustling artsy shopping center on the river and quite near down town. The Twig bookstore now finds itself front and center in what was once the “Full Goods” building. It’s front door leads in from the courtyard, which on Saturdays has a beautiful and bountiful farmer’s market.
The Twig’s new digs are spacious, light and airy with ample room to walk around allowing for browsing without bumping into other readers and with enough space to sit down and leaf through a book filled with imagination. Staffed with avid readers and book lovers, help for the one needing it is never hard to find in this delightfully cheery place.
A favorite of mine for over ten years, The Twig welcomes local authors and poets alike for readings and book signings. Regional authors are high lighted in a bookcase by the front door where one can find a varied assortment of titles and genres. My favorite finds on these shelves have always includes local cookbooks which share in the vast abundance of German Country Style or Tex-Mex food preparations and cuisine.
My passion for the place has always been kindled by the eager help I consistently receive from the staff who joyfully order that special book for the children in my life. My niece has been the recipient of many a fairy tale from The Twig’s ample collection.
The Pearl shopping center has boutiques, a world-class culinary school, fabulous restaurants and free parking. Also included are several condos, which fill out the renovated multi-use property. Brilliantly nestled in the Museum corridor of down town San Antonio, the Pearl is on the San Antonio Riverwalk allowing you to pick up a new book and within a few short paces, find a quiet riverbank seat under a willow to realx and read.
The Twig gets it’s name from Alexander Pope and the quote “Tis education forms the common mind; just as the twig is bent the tree’s inclined.” A visit to The Twig will provide you with multiple reading choices especially as you seek to further your South Texas culinary experience.
