Some Dating Advice for Book Lovers on Valentine’s Day

The perfect poem for book lovers, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face:

Lending Out Books

by Hal Sirowitz

You’re always giving, my therapist said.

You have to learn how to take.  Whenever

you meet a woman, the first thing you do

is lend her your books.  You think she’ll

have to see you again in order to return them.

But what happens is, she doesn’t have the time

to read them, & she’s afraid if she sees you again

you’ll expect her to talk about them, & will

want to lend her even more.  So she

cancels the date.  You end up losing

a lot of books.  You should borrow hers.

An excellent point, but when you borrow someone’s books they might expect you to have read them the next time they see you. If you aren’t dating exclusively this can quickly become a LOT of books to read. And it is an automatic expectation that you will call again at LEAST to return the books.

The safest thing is to steal her books.

I’ve lost so many books by “lending” them to friends, that at this point I’m thinking of creating some sort of inter-library loan system.

An upside to a failing memory is that I don’t remember who borrowed my books, or even that I lent them out. Mostly, I grateful for the space on my bookshelves once a book is borrowed.
