On the one hand I have enormous respect for them. Sandra Cisneros, Alice Munro, Dorothy Parker, all geniuses. Plus, I actually love writing them myself. It's the perfect thing if you want to capture a snapshot of a character. Yet, it's very difficult to write a plot oriented short story. Fact is that sometimes it's not enough to just read about a complex, well developed character. You want to see them do something every once in awhile. Also because short stories tend to be such a radically different style from novels, you really need to be in the right mood to enjoy them. I have such mixed feelings about short stories.
