ps. re; the translated work of Julia Alvarez is most likely from English to the Spanish and others. Her unique voice presents the complexity of multi-cultural life and is worth reading.

I agree E of the Hedgehog should be read slowly, the character's transformation 'is' the story. The story is haunting. Look for Julia Alvarez , 'Finding Miracles', (Readers Circle) In the Time of Butterflies, www.juliaalvarez.com/

What great suggestions! The Little Prince is one of my favorite all time books, I still have my copy from middle school. I completely forgot that it's a translation.

I loved the movie Like Water for Chocolate and it's been long enough that I don't quite remember it, perfect for reading the book.

Janice, the description of The Carnivorous Lamb felt like my reading day--Rabbit is Rich, the Amazon debacle and translated works thrown in a blender, out comes The Carnivorous Lamb!

My favorite translation: The Little Prince.

PLEASE do not let Emma know about "eructation." That would definitely be her newest go-to word.

oh, also try "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquirel (Mexican). It was made into a movie several years ago, so it shouldn't be too hard to find in english. This is one of my favorites. Beautifully written, very romantic.

Isabel Allende is a Chilean author. I've only read "House of the Spirits" myself which is very enjoyable. A lot of symbolism. And most of her work is very well reviewed and available in English.
