Plant a Tree for Every Book
Over 30 million virgin trees are cut down to publish books for the United States alone. Claire and I work hard to reduce our carbon footprint, although Claire is better at making everyone take shorter showers in her house. I’ve reduced our carbon footprint by purchasing trees to be planted in our local burn areas, and there are several to choose from. Today, I just balanced out this year’s reading by purchasing a tree for every book I’ve read with Eco-Libris. Eco-Libris describes itself as “a green business that enables people to do something reasonable, affordable yet with an impact: plant one tree for every book they read. We believe that taking responsibility for the environmental costs of the books we read is only natural.”
Eco-Libris plants 1.3 trees in a developing country (currently Nicaragua, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama or Malawi) and sends a sticker to the purchaser for every dollar it receives. I sent in a donation today and plan to put the stickers on the books I’ll be reading to spread the word about this program. Personally, I enjoy working to lessen my environmental impact and helping struggling communities thrive, it’s a double bang for my buck.
Sales Programs
For booksellers, Eco-Libris offers a direct sales program to your customers so they can balance out their purchases with you. Need a gift for the person who has everything or a gift that doesn’t add more “stuff,” Eco-Libris will send out a birthday card with stickers that the recipient can use on her books. Member of BookMoocher? For every ten books you balance out, you receive one BookMoocher point.
