The drag queens are the large black and white photo

The drag queens are the large black and white photo

When I visited Capitol Hill Books, a used bookstore in Denver, CO, I noticed a collage running down the entire side of a bookshelf.  It was made up of all the things found in used books.  My favorite was an 8 x 10 photo that at first glance is a group of 1940s “pin up” girls, but on closer look is a lineup of drag queens.

Joel Eis, owner of Rebound Bookstore, described in an interview some of the interesting items found in books in his store:  a World War II book with a Dear John letter; stationary with the Union Army logo in a Civil War book; a coffee table book containing two huge marijuana leaves; a $100 bill (flip through the used books you buy, you could find lunch money); and, stacks of airline boarding passes (I use them as bookmarks when I travel, helps me to remember where the boarding pass is located).

In one of my book groups we’re reading the Rabbit series by John Updike.  One of the members is a John Updike fanatic and owns almost all of his books, many of them she purchased used.  She shared with us an old Book-of-the-Month Club summary of Rabbit Redux and a review from 1971 she found in a used copy of Rabbit Redux, it felt like opening a literary time capsule.

What have you found in a used book?  We’d love to hear, leave a comment and share!

Rebound Bookstore, “the biggest little bookstore in the universe,” is storefront1a provider of all things art in San Rafael, CA.  A quality used bookstore that also sells CDs and video, hosts live events, offers free coffee with purchase of a book, and runs Higher Space Gallery a place of artists to hang their work.  The Marin Independent Journal quoted the owner, Joel Eis, describing the store as a cultural engine designed to “serve as a locus for cultural and idea exchange, not just be a business.”

Hand to Mouth:  WORDS SPOKEN OUT which generally features a poet but always provides a stage for local musicians and writers occurs the last Saturday of every month.  On nights the store doesn’t have an event, the space is available for rent.  My dream would be to have my birthday party in a bookstore, I don’t think that’s what Rebound is envisioning, but I could dress it up as a bookstore review reading!  Stop by the store and share your ideas over a cup of coffee, after buying a book.

Following the closure of Robin’s Book Store in Philadelphia, Jakob Dorof of the Philadelphia City Paper did a health check on some of the remaining independents in the area.  Below is a summary of what he found and in my quest for great books, where possible I’ve looked at the books each store recommends to find one that catches my eye.  I’m still celebrating my find from the Columbus bookstore roundup.  The Third Annual Philadelphia Book Festival is on April 18th and 19th, if you’re in the area drop by and look for some of these stores.

Joseph Fox Bookshop - owner Joseph Fox credits some of their success to the many off-site events the store participates in, over 200 a year.  These events give exposure to Joseph Fox Bookshop and if it is an author event, it stocks him with signed editions he continues to sell from the store.  Mr. Fox has noticed a slight slow down in sales, but he is confident that store will stay in business for years to come.  The store recommendation that caught my eye is Karnak Cafe by Naquib Mahfouz.  It’s underlying topic of state sanctioned torture is timely and I like the portions of Mahfouz’s publishing history that I’ve heard

House of Our Own – another venerable establishment, it sells new books downstairs and used upstairs.  Co-owner Deborah Sanford said to stay financially flexible the store dropped author events because calendars are Read the rest of this entry »

It’s Grandparents and Special Friends Week at school and Claire and I have family in town, so here’s a quick post with some updates:

I was interviewed about Bookstore People by Eco-Libris, check it out, then equalize your reading!

As discussed in my review of The Shadow Catcher by Marianne Wiggins, her fictional portrayal of Edward Curtis caused controversy because she paints Edward Curtis far darker than his fans perceive him.  Santa Monica chose The Shadow Catcher as its Citywide Reads selection this year.  Bruce Kapson, Curtis expert and scholar, will give a historical overview of Edward Curtis this Saturday at 3PM at the Santa Monica Public Library.

Both Claire and I joined twitter.  Follow us!  I’m BookstoreK and Claire is writemenow.

The Tournament of Books is continuing and I’m loving it!  Today City of Refuge knocked out 2666, but  popular vote returned 2666  to the zoombie round.  The review of the match up between 2666 and Steer Toward Rockwas brilliant in its use of an extended March Madness metaphor.  John Hodgman beautifully wrote his judgment of the Mercy v. My Revolutions competition.  The quarter-finals are over and we’re heading into the semi-Growing Up on the Spectrum: A Guide to Life, Love, and Learning for Teens and Young Adults with Autism and Asperger's Coverfinals.

And in case you missed it, Claire’s book, Growing Up on the Spectrum: A (actually she co-wrote it) was published last week.  We’ll be having giveaways of the book, National Autism Month, in April.  Stay tuned!
